Theory
#1 The foundations of Ashtanga Yoga
Introduction to the traditional Ashtanga Yoga method. We will emerge ourselves in the philosophy of Patanjali’s eight-fold path of Ashtanga yoga and break down the very foundations of yoga that every practitioner should know.

#2 The beginning of everything: Tristhana
3 pillars of Ashtanga yoga:
1- Breaths :: Free Breathing with Sound
2- Asanas :: The postures
3- Drishti :: Focused gaze in the postures

Practice
Our first practice will be dedicated to fundamental āsanas in Ashtanga Yoga. Lucas will break down some postures from the first series for us to learn how to practice correctly by applying the three pillars of Tristhana.

Bandhas: Activating the subtle energy.
Special focus will be set on the ever mysterious element in Ashtanga yoga: the Bandhas. We will learn how to recognize and activate the 2 main body locks – Mula Bandha & Uddiyana Bandha – in our practice of āsana.

2nd Day :: Saturday

9.00 – 11.00 Practice
11.00 – 12.00 Break
12.00 – 14.00 Workshop

Practice: Mysore Class
In Mysore class, we will learn the traditional practice of the Ashtanga yoga method where the practitioners do their practice at their own pace with the help of the teachers. This way of teaching and practicing is suitable for all levels as each individual will be able to do their practice according to their level and abilities. IT IS ALSO SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS AND NON-ASHTANGIS.

Workshop
#1 Jumping back & jumping through
Dynamic vinyasa is one of the key elements in Ashtanga yoga – and also the main challenge of every Ashtanga yoga practitioner. Lucas will guide us through a series of exercises that will help us understand our jump back and jump through in between asanas.

#2 Breathing technique
To end our second day we will move our prana with some pranayama – the breathing techniques. Lucas will teach us how to correctly practice Nadhi Sodhana – the alternate nostril breathing technique. This pranayama technique aims to clear and purify the subtle channels and balance our yin and yang energies.

11.00 – 12.00 Break
12.00 – 14.00 Workshop & Theory

Workshop: The foundation to a safe backbending
Backbends are powerful energizing postures that help us open up our chest, our rib cage and our heart. In this workshop we will learn to move into backbends safely and consciously, engaging the muscles needed to protect the lumbar spine.

Theory: The importance of Parampara
Parampara is the knowledge pass down to the students by their teacher. Here Lucas will speak about his personal yoga journey – about his beginnings and the importance of having a teacher. He will tell us about why he’s returning to Mysore every year and what his teacher Sharath means on his path.

About the teacher

Lucas Carvalho is a psychologist and started practicing Yoga in 2007. Having practiced mostly Hatha Yoga until then, Lucas decided to go to Mysore in 2013 to know India and to practice Ashtanga Yoga at the KPJAYI.

With the first contact with Sharath Jois, in the same year, Lucas had his first experience with practicing Ashtanga six times a week as it is traditionally practiced (Mysore Style).

Since then, he began dedicating himself exclusively to Ashtanga, having practiced with many authorized and certified teachers by KPJAYI, such as: Harmony Slater, Kino MacGregor, Tim Feldmann, Dany Sá, Mark Robberds, Lu Andrade, Sharmila Desai and a few others.

In 2015, Lucas returned to Mysore for two more months of practice with Sharath Jois at the KPJAYI, and again in the 2015/2016 season for three more months. During this third journey to Mysore, he received the level 2 authorization, with the blessing of Sharath Jois.

Still in 2016, Lucas was invited by Tim Feldmann to assist him in his classes during the whole month of July at Miami Life Center and to teach at MLC for one month and half.

At the end of 2017, Lucas had the amazing experience to assist Eddie Stern during his 3 days workshop in Brazil.

This last Summer (2018) during the months of June and July, Lucas had the honour and the blessings to be one of the assistants of Sharathji during his classes at KPJAYI in Mysore, India.
